The Mythmakers- These Are a Few of My Favorite Things…

The Mythmakers: The Remarkable Fellowship of C.S. Lewis & J.R.R. Tolkien by John Hendrix

1st Favorite Thing- The book focuses on both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien and their relationship. I think it is unique that this author focused on the relationship between the two authors.

2nd Favorite Thing- The book has a graphic novel format. The illustrations in the book are well done and the dialogue connected with the illustrations absolutely add to the book.

3rd Favorite Thing- In addition to the graphic novel format, the book has sections that are in paragraphs when that is the more effective way to deliver the information. While I did enjoy the graphic novel format of the novel, I appreciated that the author was comfortable delivering information through paragraph form when that was the best way to deliver the information.

4th Favorite Thing- The book has depth. I often find that books on Lewis or Tolkein hit on the same main points. I liked that I walked away from this book learning new information. For example, the book goes into quite a bit of detail into the ideas and history of myths and epics.

5th Favorite Thing- There are parts of the book where the author gives the reader an option to learn more about a specific topic. For example on page 19 of the book, the author gives the reader the option to learn more about “The Roots of Myth” by going to page 188 or the author says “or you may continue reading”. I think this is a great way of differentiating a book for all types of readers.
